Abstract
This research dealt with the study of flouting maxim in The Fault in Our Stars novel by John Green. There are two problem statements for this study. 1 maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner. The researcher used descriptive qualitative because the source data in this research were utterances taken from novel. The findings showed that there are twenty eight times of flouting maxims in the novel which are presented in two data. The characters flouted nineteen times one maxim and nine times flouted two maxims in their utterances. The reason of flouting was varied based on the context and situation of conversation such as deny something, changing the topic, making a joke, disagreeing and etc. The research was concluded based on the findings of conversations happened in the novel as the data which implies if participant flouted maxim thus did not mean the conversation is over.
