Abstract

The title of the study is “A Study of Love in Nicholas Sparks’s The Best of Me.” The aim of this study is to discover the types of love in the main character and to find out how love is portrayed in the novel. The study adopts the theory of new criticism by Abrams (1999), character by Stanton (1965), methods of characterization by Murphy (1972), types of love by Lewis (1960/1988) and styles of love by Lee (1973). The research method is qualitative research using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The data are taken from The Best of Me novel that is written by Nicholas Sparks. The study found that the characteristics of the main character which is: Dawson is brave, generous, hard worker, diligent, Independent, good looking, and handsome. The kinds of love that the writer finds in Dawson character is agape or charity love. After doing the analysis, the thesis writer concludes that love happens between friends and couple is known as agape or mostly associated with interpersonal love.
