Abstract

The trend of social networking nowadays encourages people of being creative to use and make new terms and use them in social interaction. One of the most popular social networking nowadays is Twitter. It gives people 140 character letters to express and share their feeling in this media. To fit the limited space of only 140 character letters, people usually use abbreviation. This study discusses the morphological aspects of such abbreviations commonly used in Twitter. The study aims to answer two points: the formation processes of abbreviation found in Twitter and the categories of abbreviation that are found in Twitter. This study adopts the morphological theory of the word formation process to analyze the abbreviations, especially the abbreviation discussed by Plag (2002) and Wagner (2010). The study adopts descriptive qualitative approach because it aims to identify the phenomena of abbreviation and explain their formation processes. The writer obtains the data randomly from the Twitter by using the search column to get the tweets (The term for status that created by someone in twitter) by the tweeps (The term for someone who create status). The sentences that contain the abbreviation are selected and collected as the data. The result of the study shows that the abbreviations found in Twitter can be divided into four categories: Initial letters, Non Initial Letters, Pseudo Initialism, and Acronym. Meanwhile the Non-Initial letters are divided into two categories, they are contraction and shortening. Since twitter only provides 140 character letters, it will be more efficient to use abbreviation. The most frequently used abbreviations are initial letters, because initial letters are actually taking the least space in reducing the long sentences. Meanwhile, the least used abbreviations are contraction, because actually using contraction seems to make the words hard to understand.
