Abstract

This thesis is a report of a study of verbs and verb phrases that are related to the concept of survival. The focus of the study is identification of the verbs and verb phrases that are related to the concept of survival and the types of semantic relations they hold with survival. The theoretical framework is the concept of semantic field based on Kreidler’s (1998) and Kennedy’s (2003) classification that identifies the types of semantic relation into four: hyponymy, synonymy, antonymy, and collocation. The data are taken from Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games. In analyzing this topic, the thesis writer applies a descriptive qualitative approach because the purpose of the study is to examine and explain the lexical relationsbetween the concept of survival and the verbs and verb phrases related to survival found in Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games. The study found 77 data which consist of 34 hyponym, 13 synonym, 21 antonym, and 14 collocation. The finding shows that the main theme of the novel is survival which expressed in various verbs and verb phrases and these expressions show four different types of meaning relations with the keyword survival.
