Abstract
Motivation is a natural thing that can trigger someone to do the best effort in whatever someone does. This study is about Kirito’s motivation of survival in Kawahara Reki’s Sword Art Online. There two problems that are going to be answered. The first problem is Kirito’s motivations of survival. The second problem is Kirito’s efforts to attain his goal that appears from his motivation of survival. Some theoretical reviews applied in this study are character, plot, setting, motivation and psychology of survival. In conducting this study, the thesis writer uses qualitative research. Moreover, the approaches applied in this study are intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is applied since this study discusses about main character’s motivation, plot, and setting in the novel. The extrinsic approach is applied in this study due to the fact that the analysis is related to the psychological motivation of the character in the story. The result of the analysis shows that Kirito’s motivations are divided into internal and external motivation. Kirito’s internal motivation of survival is not only because he wants to stay alive but also because he challenges by his own pride as a gamer to win the game and winning the game means to survive. Moreover, Kirito’s external motivation comes from influences outside of him. He meets many kinds of people, friends, a lover, and enemies that motivate him to keep struggling and doing his best to win the game. Kirito learns that his goals are not attained without movement, striving and effort. Thus in order to reach his goal, Kirito makes decisive effort to attain his goal. His efforts are classified into: identifying the problem, analyzing the problem, and struggling to win the game. Based on the analysis, the thesis writer concluded that motivation to survive makes people never give up in attaining their goal. Motivation makes people grow their personality and change them into better people. With great efforts that are triggered from their motivations, they will be able to attain their goal.
