Abstract

This study aims to determine the barriers to interpersonal communication between Flores students and Javanese students. The qualitative approach is descriptive. Ten respondents were successfully recruited. The theory used is the theory of uncertainty reduction by Charles Berger and Richard Calabresse. Data collected through observation, interviews and documentation. This study shows the results that Flores students and Javanese students experience many obstacles during communication. Values, individual uniqueness and cultural characteristics, stereotypes are obstacles for informants in building interactions and adapting. Language (dialect) is the main obstacle for informants in communication every day because of differences in language (dialect) which often make it difficult for informants to communicate between cultures. The obstacles that occur have an impact on the social life of the informants, where there are social disparities in the informants' personal. However, over time, the informants used three strategies to reduce communication barriers, namely passive, active, and interactive strategies.
