Abstract

This study examines the communication experiences of adolescent girls with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Surabaya as they make sense of their self-identity following a diagnosis of a chronic autoimmune disease that affects their physical, psychological, and social well-being. The study employs a qualitative approach using Alfred Schutz’s social phenomenology to deeply understand the informants’ life experiences, while data analysis is conducted using George Herbert Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism through the concepts of mind, self, and society. The study’s informants consist of two women with SLE, aged 21 and 22, residing in Surabaya, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that a lupus diagnosis alters how the informants perceive themselves, their bodies, their daily activities, and their future. Physical conditions such as easy fatigue, limitations regarding sun exposure, the treatment regimens they must follow, and the possibility of flare-ups necessitate various adjustments in their daily lives. In this process, support from family, friends, and close associates plays a crucial role in fostering self-acceptance and the development of a more positive sense of identity. Conversely, comments about physical changes, stigma resulting from the public’s lack of understanding of lupus, and treatment that overly restricts their activities often cause feelings of discomfort and lower self-confidence. Informants also tended to disclose their health condition selectively based on the closeness of the relationship and the communication needs at hand. This study concludes that the self-identity of women with lupus is formed through a process of self-reflection and social interaction that unfolds dynamically and gradually, in which lupus becomes part of their life experience that shapes how they perceive themselves, yet does not entirely define their identity, as the informants continue to strive to maintain their independence, fulfill social roles, and hold hopes and plans for the future.
