Abstract
The high traffic volume on the Solo–Yogyakarta–New Yogyakarta International Airport Kulon Progo Toll Road, particularly the Yogyakarta–Kulon Progo segment, has not been matched by an adequate supply of Type A Rest and Service Areas. In fact, driver fatigue is the leading cause of traffic accidents on this toll road. This final project aims to design a Type A Rest and Service Area in Kulon Progo Regency as both a functional rest facility and an optimal energy-recovery zone. To address the loss of green space resulting from the construction of the toll road, this design employs a Biophilic Architecture approach to create a restorative connection between humans and nature. The design process involves an analysis of the existing site and the integration of local cultural values from the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The result of the design is an integrated area named “Pesanggrahan Rawikara”. The facilities provided include a gas station, an electric vehicle charging station, a health clinic, green open spaces covering more than 20 percent of the area, and a commercial area that allocates 70 percent of its space to local UMKM. Regional identity is embodied through the adaptation of the Joglo roof typology to a natural ventilation system. Through this synthesis, the design successfully meets the technical standards of highway regulations while providing a rest area that is healthy, safe, and imbued with cultural character.
