Abstract

Verbal aggression is a form of aggressive behavior expressed through words and is increasingly found in student interactions on social media platform X. One of the psychological factors presumed to play a role in controlling such behavior is emotion regulation, which refers to an individual’s ability to manage and control their emotions. This study aims to examine the relationship between emotion regulation and verbal aggression among university students aged 18–25 who use social media platform X. The research subjects consisted of 180 active student users of X in Surabaya. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The research instruments consisted of the Verbal Aggression Scale and the Emotion Regulation Scale, both of which had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test to determine the relationship between emotion regulation as the independent variable and verbal aggression as the dependent variable. The results showed a significant negative correlation between emotion regulation and verbal aggression (p < 0.05), indicating that the higher the emotion regulation, the lower the verbal aggression, and conversely, lower emotion regulation corresponds to higher verbal aggression among student users of social media platform X.
