Abstract

This research dealt with the study of flouting maxim in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Play by Edward Albee. There are two problem statements for this study. 1) What types of maxims are flouted in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? 2) What is the reason for flouting maxims in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? To conduct the research, the researcher used theory of flouting maxim by Grice. There are four kind of maxim that is called Cooperative Principle. Those maxims are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner. The researcher used descriptive qualitative because the source data in this research were occurs taken from script of play. The analysis shows that there are one hundred and one times of flouting maxims in the play which are presented in the data. Maxim of manner is the most frequent of being flouted 33 times. Meanwhile maxim of quantity is the least of being flouted 8 times. The reason is varied such as competitive 65 instances, conflictive 33 instances, convivial 2 instances, and collaborative 1 instance.
