Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and parental expectations with fear of failure in grade XII high school students in Surabaya facing the college entrance exam. The study used a quantitative method with a correlational design and involved 377 respondents selected through convenience sampling technique. The instrument used was a Likert scale questionnaire that measured three main variables: self-efficacy, parental expectations, and fear of failure. The results of multiple regression analysis showed a significant relationship between self-efficacy and parental expectations simultaneously with fear of failure (p < 0.05). Self-efficacy has a negative relationship with fear of failure, meaning that the higher the student's self-efficacy, the lower the level of fear of failure felt. Conversely, parental expectations have a positive relationship with fear of failure, where the higher the parental expectations, the higher the fear of failure in students. The effective contribution of self-efficacy to fear of failure was -29.9% and parental expectations was 16.3%. These findings emphasize the importance of developing self-efficacy and managing parental expectations so that students can reduce anxiety and fear of failure in facing the college entrance exam. This research contributes to the development of educational psychology and offers practical recommendations for students, parents, and educators in supporting students' mental readiness to face academic challenges.
