Abstract

This research entitled “Women’s Struggles in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Santosh Thapa’s Pride and Prejudice School: A Comparative Analysis” explores the portrayal of women’s struggles in two different literary works from distinct cultural and temporal backgrounds. This study applies a comparative literature approach supported by feminist literary theory to analyze and compare the intrinsic elements (characters and characteristics, plot, setting, conflict, and theme) and how women’s struggles are represented in Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice School. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813) presents the life of Elizabeth Bennet, a woman who challenges the social expectations in 18th century England, particularly in matters of marriage and social class. Meanwhile, Santosh Thapa’s Pride and Prejudice School (2020) is a modern story Wattpad fanfiction adaptation set in a contemporary Nepalese school environment, portraying the teenage protagonist Aakriti Rajbhandari, who navigates issues of self-esteem, love, and social pressure within a school setting. The findings show that although the settings and cultural contexts differ significantly, both protagonists face similar forms of gender-based struggles. They are pressured by societal norms to conform but ultimately resist by asserting their independence, values, and beliefs. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of feminism in literature and provide insight into how women's voices and identities are shaped and represented in both classic and contemporary narratives.
