Abstract

Apart from being a part of mass media, films have the role of a communication tool which is used to share entertainment, show events, drama, music, stories and other presentations for the public. Semiotics is a science that studies signs in an object with the aim of understanding what meaning is contained in the object. Semiotics consists of several theories that discuss how symbols can describe feelings, states, ideas, conditions and situations outside the sign itself. This research aims to interpret the representation of mental disorders or mental illness in the film "Ketika Berhenti di Sini" using qualitative research methods and Roland Barthes' Semiotics theory which argues that semiotics has two levels of signs (Denotation and Connotation). Finally, the following research results were obtained: The mental disorders or mental illness represented in the film "Ketika Berhenti di Sini" occurred because: (1) twice you felt like you had lost someone you loved forever; (2) the difficulty of making peace and accepting someone's departure; (3) constantly feeling guilty for the departure of someone in their life; (4) memory that continues to remember events in the past. If this continues, it can result in: (1) something that causes quarrels; (2) something that can cause conflict between family members; (3) something that triggers the departure of someone in their life. Apart from that, the representation of mental illness in this film is also supported by a soundtrack that matches the storyline, lack of lighting and the body movements of the film actors.
