Abstract

This research aims to analyze the reception of Surabaya women activists regarding feminism in the live action Barbie film which was broadcast on July 19 2023. The Barbie film tells the story of the lives of Barbies who have different characters, all women are called Barbie and men are called Ken, but they can get to know each other. This research uses the basis of Stuart Hall's reception theory, namely analyzing meaning and reception which is divided into three positions, namely, Domination position, Negotiation position and Opposition position. The approach to this research uses qualitative research methods with reception analysis techniques. The results of open interviews and documentation show differences in the meaning of feminism by informants. Two informants, Ika Aryani and Dini Fikmah, were in a dominant position, accepting the message of feminism in the film as positive and basic. Informant Diena is in a negotiating position, accepting the message of feminism but also admitting that there are different opinions. Informant Nara was in an oppositional position, rejecting the message of feminism in the film because it was seen as showing women as superior. Future research will focus more on one community to obtain more diverse and relevant information on feminism. Researchers also suggest using methods and theories that are more appropriate to the research background to expand communication science related to gender issues.
