Abstract
This study aims to identify the reception of Communication Science students at the University of 17 August 1945 Surabaya towards charity content videos on the MrBeast YouTube channel. The analysis focuses on two videos featuring Jimmy, also known as MrBeast, performing philanthropic activities involving donations amounting to a staggering $300,000 to people he meets. This subject intrigues the researcher to explore how students respond to the concept of sharing presented in these videos. The study employs a qualitative research method using Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which categorizes audience responses into three positions: Dominant Hegemony, Negotiated, and Oppositional. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings from a total of 9 informants reveal varying receptions among them, based on their personal experiences and knowledge. The results indicate that out of the 9 informants, 6 are in the Dominant Hegemony position, 2 are in the Oppositional position, and 1 is in the Negotiated position.
