Abstract

This research approach is descriptive qualitative. The focus of this research is to explain the form of participation of the Berau community in the development of tourism in Berau Regency and identify what is the driving factor of participation of the Berau community in tourism development. The data in this study were obtained from the process of interviews, documentation and field observations, while the analysis technique was carried out through the process of data collection, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that (1) Community participation in tourism development, in the planning process, the community is involved in the deliberation forum held by the Tourism Office before developing tourism objects. In the implementation process, the community is moved to participate in the process of building facilities and infrastructure to support tourism. (2) Community participation in tourism promotion, the community is also active in tourism promotion activities by consciously carrying out the process of disseminating information on tourism objects in Berau to social media with easier and wider reach and access to information. (3) Factors affecting tourism development, increased employment, where when tourism objects are developed in certain areas in Berau Regency, will absorb the new workforce. Furthermore, tourism development with the opening of tourist attractions will also increase the economic income of Berau people in the tourist area.
