Abstract
This research aims to find out the types of men’s and women’s language features that are used by male and female lead characters in the “Brooklyn” movie using Lakoff (1973) for Women’s Language and Coates (2016) for Men’s Language theory. In addition, this research also aims to find the differences between men’s and women’s language features that appear in the movie. By using the descriptive qualitative method, the researcher explains the data that has been found in detail. The research findings show that have been found total 88 data from both main characters. The male lead character used 5 language features with each data: Minimal Responses (1), Questions (23), Commands and Directives (2), Swear and Taboo Language (1), and Compliments (2). The female lead character used 8 language features: Lexical Hedges or Fillers (10), Tag Questions (5), Rising Intonation on Declaratives (19), Empty Adjectives (4), Intensifiers (14), Hypercorrect Grammar (1), Superpolite Forms (4), and Emphatic Stress (2). The highest Men’s Language features is Questions with 23 data found because the male lead character wanted to learn about the female main character because she is the new girl in town, while the highest Women’s Language Features is Rising Intonation on Declarative with 19 data found because she felt hesitant or not confidence enough when she is in new country.
