Abstract

Sandblasting is a method of shooting abrasive particles with high pressure on the surface of a material in order to cause impact, remove contamination, and create a rough profile when cleaning the surface. Sandblasting is the fastest and most efficient method for removing paint, rust, salt and oil. The steel used in this research is low carbon steel, namely ST40 steel with dimensions of 100 mm x 100 mm x 5 mm, with variations used, namely pressure 5, 6, 7 bar, distance 40, 70, 100 cm, and time 8, 10, and 12 seconds. The testing process carried out is roughness test, hardness test, measurement of specimen weight, as well as calculations using the Taguchi method. Metal that loses weight indicates corrosion, because it is a corrosion parameter so you can know the age of the component or its metal construction. The treatment of the roughness test process obtained the same results as the Taguchi smaller the better method calculations where at 5 bar air pressure variations the average was 63,77 um, at 6 bar 71,87 um, and 7 bar 84, 78 um. The results obtained state that if the spraying pressure is greater, the sand impact force will be greater and the plastic deformation will be greater. Then the distance variation at 40 cm is 82,11 um, 70 cm is 73,88 um, and 100 cm is 65,44 um. The results obtained show that the greater the distance, the rougher it becomes, and vice versa. Then at varying spray times of 8 seconds the average is 70,88 um, at 10 seconds it is 71,89 um, and at 12 seconds it is 78,65 um, so the longer time will roughen the steel surface, but if the time is short it will reduce surface roughness. The sandblasting process is also carried out to obtain the hardness value of the steel. The calculation method used is larger the better which produces a value at 5 bar of air pressure variation of 74,07 HRB, at 6 bar of 74,50 HRB, and 7 bar of 74,80 HRB. So the higher the pressure, the greater the hardness of the steel. Then variations in distance produce an average of 74,62 HRB at 40 cm, 74,21 HRB at 70 cm, and 74,54 HRB at 100 cm. This indicates that greater distance will reduce the steel hardness value, and vice versa. Then the variation in time gets an average of 8 seconds of 73,87 HRB, 10 seconds of 74,26 HRB, and 12 seconds of 75,23 HRB. So it is concluded that a long time will result in a greater hardness value, and conversely a shorter time will result in a lower steel hardness.
