Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the significance of Symbolism in Josh Malerman's Bird Box. The issue is the significance of the symbols that are revealed in the novel. The author employs the theory of Fredrick William Dillistone in this research, which involves all aspects of symbolism behavior, but still has discrepancies. To interpret the data, the author employs qualitative research methods that involve depicting and explaining the symbolism in the story. The objective of this research is to explain the significance of symbols that are observed in Bird Box. The approach employed in this research is intrinsic approach and the methods of data collection are reading and highlighting. The results of this investigation demonstrate that there are 9 narrative symbols employed in the novel: 1. Birds which symbolize alarm danger, 2. Blindfold which symbolize protection, 3. The concept of Motherhood which symbolize sacrifice, 4. The River which symbolize journey, 5. The Unseen Entity which symbolize fear and terror, 6. Safe House which symbolize safety and security, 7. Draw Well which symbolize medicine, 8. Dogs which symbolize guide, 9. Box which symbolize physical barrier and hope. The findings of this thesis demonstrate the complexity and power of symbolism in Bird Box. The symbols that were explored in the study enhance the reader's understanding of the novel's concepts, increase the emotional impact of the narrative, and participate in a larger discussion of the power of symbols in modern literature.
