Abstract

The MIG welding process uses feeder electrodes or called wire electrodes and protective gases such as CO2. This study aims to determine the welding surface defects and tensile strength values of MIG welding results with variations in wire diameter and current in ST 37 steel. First, the preparation of steel plate ST 37 5 mm thick. The welding process is carried out using wire variations Ø0.8 Ø1 and Ø1.2 with current variations of 90A, 110A, and 130A. The results of the welding are carried out penetrant testing. After that, a tensile test specimen (ASTM E8) is formed. All specimens are subjected to tensile testing. The results obtained from penetrant testing are specimens with the highest number of welding defects are in specimens Ø0.8 130A, Ø1 130A, and Ø1.2 90A with the same number of 5 defects each, namely Spatter, Undercut, and Overlap. This is because the amperage is too high and the distance between the wire and objects is irregular. While the specimens with the least number of welding defects are in specimens Ø0.8 90A, Ø1 90A, Ø1 110A, and Ø1.2 110A with the same number of 2 defects each, namely Overlap, Porosity, and Spatter. This is because the welding speed is too slow and the wind factor so that the protective gas is irregular. For tensile testing, it was found that the highest average voltage value was in specimen Ø1.2 current 130A with a value of 52.78 kg/mm2. While the lowest average voltage value is in the specimen Ø1 current 90A with a value of 47.34 kg/mm2. The highest strain is in raw material with 7.22%.
