Abstract

Rivers have always been inseparable from human life. The continuous population growth, accompanied by urbanization in major cities, has led to the conversion of river buffer areas, gradually transforming the appearance of urban villages in Indonesia. This transformation not only has the potential to impact the environment but also endangers the settlements located along the rivers. The Brantas River is a river that passes through densely populated residential areas in Jalan Muharto RT. 05 RW.06 Kotalama, Malang City. The density of buildings in these settlements and encroachment on the riverbanks not only affect the environment but also pose a danger to the residents, as demonstrated by the landslide that occurred in 2022. Limited land availability and socio-economic factors make it difficult to relocate the village communities to other areas. Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the settlements by relocating houses that encroach upon the riverbanks to vertical housing units that remain in the same area, as well as compromising by trimming the parts of the houses that extend beyond the designated boundary. By reorienting all modified structures towards the river and elevating the vertical dwellings on platforms, the settlements can become more environmentally adaptive. The incorporation of accents such as local materials and architectural designs that reflect the characteristics of urban village houses can enhance the sense of place in the area. Additionally, utilizing the riverbank areas for recreation and developing spaces for selling goods can make the community not only adaptive to the environment but also responsive to the livelihoods of the village residents.
