Abstract

TIG welding is a metal joining process that is often used in the construction sector, this welding utilizes an electric arc formed by a tungsten electrode and uses a filler metal of the same type as the welding material. This study aims to determine welding defects and tensile strength of ST 37 steel by TIG welding using variations in tungsten diameter of 1.2 mm, 2.4 mm, 3.2 mm and current magnitudes of 80 A, 100 A, 120 A. The first step namely preparing ST 37 steel material, then welding is carried out with variations in the diameter of the tungsten and the amount of current. Then, penetrant testing was carried out according to the ASME 2010 Section 6 standard and specimens were made according to the ASTM-E8 standard for tensile testing. It was found that the highest number of defects was in the 3.2 mm tungsten variation with 80 A current with a total of 8 points with porosity, crack, undercut and tungsten inclusion defects. While the least number of welding defects is in the 3.2 mm tungsten variation with a current of 120 A, namely 2 points with cluster porosity and tungsten inclusion defects. From this penetrant test, it can be concluded that the greater the current used in the welding process, the less defects will result, and vice versa, if a small current is used, the more defects will result. Then the highest tensile strength value is found in the 1.6 mm tungsten variation and 120 A current the average maximum stress value is 43.13 kg/mm2 and the average strain value is 6.72%, while the lowest tensile strength value is in the 2.4 mm tungsten variation and 80 A current with an average maximum stress value of 29 .75 kg/mm2 and an average strain value of 0.68%.
