Abstract

The purposes of this study is to understand the relationship between variable personality and work engagement on employee that is working in Surabaya City. This research use survey as a means to collect data. This study obtained a sample of 115 employee that is working in Surabaya City. Scale that is used in this research is an adaptation of a scale that have been published before. Work Engagement Scale was adapted from Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) by Schaufeli and Bakker (2004) and personality scale was adapted from Big Five Inventory (BFI) by John and Srivastava (1999). The analysis method used to test the hypothesis in this research is multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS. From the first hypothesis it was found that personality can be used as predictor to find out the level of work engagement an employee have, with R=0,646, F=36,877, and p<0,05. From the other hypothesis in this research it was found that the dimensions of extraversion (β=0,859 and p<0,05) and conscientiousness (β=0,765 and p<0,05) have significant relationship with work engagement an employee could have. While dimension of agreeableness, neuroticism and openness don’t have a significant relationship.
