Abstract

This study aims to uncover the role of parents in reducing social media addiction in children through interpersonal communication. The research was conducted in Kepuhkiriman, Sidoarjo, involving 12 informants consisting of 3 girls and 3 boys who are still in elementary school, along with their respective mothers. The findings of this study reveal several findings that highlight the importance of the role of parents in reducing social media addiction in children through interpersonal communication. Some aspects that need to be considered by parents include openness and communication, empathy and attention, supportive behavior and positive approach, supportive attitudes and time restrictions, equality and open dialogue, interaction management and expressive power, as well as confidence and awareness. Parents need to create a safe and comfortable environment where children can openly discuss their experiences and feelings related to social media. They should demonstrate empathy, listen attentively, and provide emotional support to the child. Additionally, parents need to offer wise advice, limit social media usage time, and teach children about the consequences of excessive usage. They should also involve children in decision-making regarding social media and provide space for selfexpression. Through this research, it is known that to reduce social media addiction in children, interpersonal communication can be utilized by emphasizing a humanistic perspective, particularly in terms of openness, empathy, positive attitude, and support. These aspects are known to enhance the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between parents and children, which in turn can impact the child's addiction level towards social media.
