Abstract

As technology develops today, delivering messages can be done through several media, such as television and radio mass media. According to the book "Film Production Guide (For Beginners)" Karsa and Baksin (2018: 2) (Sangkhylang and Rinawati 2021), film is a mass communication medium that presents impressions depicting a reality close to people's lives through moving images. Various kinds of films are able to convey some information or messages that screenwriters and directors want to convey. The movie "Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap" is one example of media as a forum for information in the delivery of culture, from many other films that also raise issues or cultural introductions. The movie "Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap" depicts several Batak cultures that are close to the Toba Batak community. It attracted the attention of researchers to identify Batak culture contained in the film. This research uses a qualitative research method with John Fiske's semiotic analysis that looks at the 3 levels of television codes, namely the level of reality, representation and ideology. The results of this study show that the movie "Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap" illustrates the representation of Batak culture, related to the first Batak child must marry a fellow Batak, the last child does not migrate to take care of his parents, depiction of the Sulang-Sulang Pahompu Traditional Party, Ulos differences for traditional events, and the closeness of the extended family in household affairs. In conclusion, each television code contained in this movie represents Batak culture. It is hoped that this research can provide additional information related to Batak culture represented by the film "Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap" and further research can develop from various aspects and other methods of analysis.
