Abstract
Popular culture has such a big impact, especially in the spread of cross-cultural values. One of the values that is spread is the value of gender. This study discusses Manga as one of the popular cultures from Japan which is favored by people from all walks of life carrying various kinds of Japanese cultural values including a new masculine concept, namely soft masculinity. The Tokyo Revengers manga is a manga with an action genre with a supernatural twist. The uniqueness of this manga is that Ken Wakui depicts characters using accessories that are towards the feminine, as well as several character traits and behaviors that are identical to female traits. Seeing the high number of active manga readers in Indonesia, this study uses the reception analysis method supported by Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding theory. The results of the study show that the reception of the informants is determined by their environmental background and experience in the reality of their lives and on social media. The reception was divided into three audience positions which were dominated by hegemonic-dominant readings which contained three to four informants in each indicator, then the readings that were negotiated numbered two people and one person in the opposition reading position.
