Abstract

The technique of joining metal materials by welding the Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) type is currently being used for manufacturing processes on a small to large scale, especially applied in joining materials used for construction. One metal material that is widely used for construction is ASTM A36 steel. In the application of ASTM A36 steel for construction, it is very necessary to pay attention to the mechanical properties produced at the joints. ASTM A36 welding joints must have good toughness to be used in construction. This study aims to determine the effect of using variations in electric current strength and type of electrode on the Impact strength / toughness value of ASTM A36 steel with the SMAW welding method. This research is an experimental research by welding SMAW ASTM A36 steel using current strength with variations of 60 Amphere, 80 Amphere, 100 Amphere and types of electrodes NK-68, RD-260, RD-460, then impact testing is carried out, with a specimen size of 10 mm x 10mm x 55mm and using a U notch, Impact testing the charpy method with the ASTM E23 Standard. The results showed that the highest toughness of all types of electrodes is at a current strength of 100 Amphere, which is 1.695 J/mm2.
