Abstract

In Indonesia powder metallurgy is one of the production techniques using powder as a starting material before the forming process. This principle is to condense metal powder into the desired shape and then heat it below the melting temperature (saiful, 2012). So that the metal particles alloy because of the mechanism of mass transport due to atomic diffusion between the surface of the particles. (Aisyah, et al., 2019). While the sintering process is the powder consolidation process at high temperatures which includes the pressing or compacting process (Asyer Paulus, 2004). Material / raw material used in this study is iron powder (Iron Powder) with charcoal (Carbon). The use of iron powder (Iron Powder) aims to reduce production waste, reduce production costs, reduce further production costs, and get a practical way of producing objects. Quality components and consideration of material characteristics, as well as the benefits generated from iron powder materials (Iron Powder) will be needed to meet industrial needs. Powder metallurgy process (Powder Metallurgy) is the process of making products using powder base materials which are then compacted and sintered. In this research, we discuss variations in composition and sintering temperature on the mechanical properties of mixed materials of iron powder (Iron Powder) and local coconut shell charcoal powder (Carbon) in the powder metallurgy method. The material used in this study was using iron powder at a rate of 99%, 98%, 97% which was mixed with local coconut shell charcoal powder (Carbon) 1%, 2% 3% and then compacted with a pressure of 9000 Psi uses a holding time of 10 minutes, then sintered at a temperature of 900° with a holding time of 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Then tested the density and hardness. For this reason, this study aims to find out the results of testing the density and level of hardness on alloys of iron powder (Iron Powder) and local coconut shell charcoal powder (Carbon).
