Abstract

Aluminum-based alloys are one of the most useful alloys in the industrial world. One of the benefits is as a cladding for nuclear fuel elements. There are many ways to synthesize this alloy. One of them is powder metallurgy, with the addition of magnesium. Compaction was carried out with a load of 5000 Psi and held for 5 minutes. In this research, the sintering process of the alloy was also carried out after mixing and compacting. Sintering was carried out at a temperature of 450C with variations in holding times of 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Material identification was carried out using density, hardness and microstructure. Many factors affect the mechanical properties of the Al-Mg alloy, so in this study it involved Al powder, and the addition of Mg powder with a composition of 3.5%, 4.5% and 5.5% by weight. It is expected that the addition of Mg powder can improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum-based alloys compared to pure aluminum. From the research results, the density value was obtained for each variation of the addition of %Mg and pressure where the greatest density was in the variation of the addition of 5.5% Mg with a sintering holding time of 60 minutes with a density value of 2.5 gr/cm3 and the lowest density value in pure aluminum with time sintering resistance 60 minutes with a value of 2.33 gr/cm3. Meanwhile, the lowest hardness value was 120 minutes sintering time without the addition of Mg, namely 46.12 HRB, and the highest hardness value was 90 minutes sintering time with the addition of 4.5% Mg with a hardness value of 49.3 HRB. This shows that the higher the addition of Mg alloy makes the density decrease, can be seen in graph 4.2, and also the higher the addition of Mg, the hardness value also decreases.
