Abstract

Humans are social creatures, which means we need to interact with each other to fulfill our needs and those of others. Humans will apply communication as part of their interaction process to express their ideas. There is a relationship between each step in this process, and that relationship is language with all its alternatives. The purpose of the research is to describe the visual rhetoric that exists in portrait photography on Instagram @riomotret. The focus of this research is to cover three aspects that refer to the rhetorical triangle, namely Subject/Content, Audience/Context, Perspective. The theory used is Sonja K. Foss' Visual Rhetoric Theory and uses Wendy Hesford & Brenda Jo Brueggemann's rhetorical triangle analysis. This research method uses qualitative methods. The result of this study is to classify 10 Instagram photos through photographic analysis based on previous rhetorical messages to conclude the meaning of visual rhetoric messages using Foss' visual rhetoric theory and rhetorical triangle analysis containing Subject/Content, Audience/Context, Perspective.
