Abstract

This study aims to identify the kinds of spatial and temporal deixis used in the novel; The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. The writer selects “The Scorch Trials” novel as the subject of analysis because of the popularity of the Maze Runner series and also because it consists of deictic words that have reference meanings. Therefore, the novel can be analyzed using a pragmatic approach, specifically using George Yule’s theory about deixis. Deixis is the term from the Greek word meaning “pointing” or “showing” is that it determines the structure and interpretation of utterances following the time and place of their occurrences, the identity of the speaker, the addressee, the objects, and events in the actual situation of utterance According to Lyons,  (2003). This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method and there are several steps to analyzing. The writer reads the novel and watched the movie for mastering the plot, place, and setting, then the writer found the deixis, and classified and describes the spatial and temporal deixis. The result of a deixis analysis in the novel found kinds of spatial deixis are 4 like here, there, that, and this. Kinds of temporal deixis found 19 like last night, yesterday, yesterday morning, couple days ago, couple hours ago, a few weeks ago, an hour ago, long time ago, soon. The spatial deixis is used to describe a location participant in a speech event, temporal deixis is used to point to a certain time.
