Abstract
In the industrial world, steel is a very common material found from some steel materials found as materials in making machines, there are several steels that we find, one of which is ST 41 steel, ST 41 steel is a low-carbon steel, with a carbon content of 0.16%, because the carbon content is less than 0.30%, ST41 steel is often also applied as a component base material Machinery and construction materials that experience static loads, this steel is also often used for machine parts such as: gears, coupler chains, shafts, etc. Preheating before welding or can be called Preheating, the purpose of preheating is to reduce the residual stress, distortion or metalorgy change of the parent metal, a The metal union process by using thermal energy to melt the workpiece and electrodes (welding wire) is the basic understanding of SMAW welding, thermal energy in the SMAW welding process , it is produced due to the electric ion jumps (cathode and anode) that occur at the end of the electrode and the surface of the material as for the purpose of the this research is (1) knowing the effect of preheating on tensile tests on the welding results of ST 41 steel (2) knowing the temperature and time of resistance to tensile tests on ST 41 steel (3) knowing the temperature and time of preheating resistance to microstructure testing, the preheating process is carried out with several temperature variations, namely with a temperature of 200 ° C . 300 ° C,400 °C and with a variation in heat retention time of 20min, 30min and 40min, after that SMAW welding was carried out on the steel and then tensile and microstructure testing was carried out Kata kunci : BAJA ST 41, SMAW Welding, Preheating, Tensile Testing & Microstructure with variations in withstand time & temperature, Low Carbon Steel
