Abstract

Research entitled “Makna Patriotisme Pada Foto Militer Karya Eric Ireng (Kajian Analisis Semiotika Roland Barthes Melalui Instagram @ericireng Tahun 2021)”. Examines military photography which is a genre of photography by telling the forms of the military in Indonesia. The Instagram account @ericireng is one of the photographer accounts that share military photos. Identical to military activities carried out by the Indonesian National Armed Forces, so that military photos can have their own messages in them such as containing the value of patriotism. The number of photos to be analyzed in this study is five photos. This study uses a constructivist paradigm and a qualitative approach with the aim of analyzing the meanings contained in a military photograph. The meaning referred to in this study is the meaning based on the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes' model which is divided into three stages, namely denotation, connotation, and myth meaning. The theory and also the semiotic method are interpreted by the researcher based on vision, experience, and other knowledge. The result of the discussion of this study is the meaning of the denotation which describes the form of military activity that is not widely known by the public. While the meaning of the connotation is how sincere a soldier is when carrying out his duties. As for the myth, it can be concluded that the figure of a military soldier who is believed to be a means of defense has a hidden meaning related to patriotic values such as courage, tolerance, and willingness to sacrifice.
