Abstract

Aluminum is currently widely used and utilized in industrial activities because it is lightweight and has good mechanical strength. The use of aluminum does not have to be limited to the use of new aluminum but also used aluminum. Aluminum has the property of being malleable. This type of metal has a melting point of ±660⁰C. The material used for metal casting is recycled aluminum with magnesium alloy using simple technology, namely casting sand (Sand Casting) silica combined with bentonite binder. This research was started by making three silica sand molds adjusted to the percentage of binder in the form of bentonite (8%; 8.5%; and 9%), then the molten metal was put into the sand mold. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of pouring temperature made from recycled aluminum (Al - Mg) using silica sand molds with bentonite type binder on the mechanical properties. To determine the effect of variations in molding sand binder on the quality of casting results. To find out, several tests were carried out, namely: casting defects test, microstructure test and hardness test. Casting defects are observed visually. Microstructure testing was observed using an optical microscope to obtain images of the metal structure of the casting results. Hardness testing was measured using a rockwell hardness testing machine. From this research it is expected to know the effect of pouring temperature made from recycled materials (Al-Mg) using silica sand molds with bentonite binder on mechanical properties.
