Abstract

In this study, this study aimed to utilize coconut shells as an alternative reinforcement for composites, the filler in this study took coconut shells in powder form as a filler for polypropylene composites which were conditioned to be washed and dried. The composites in this study were made with volume loading variations of 7%, 10%, 13%, and particle sizes of 100-150 mesh, 150-200 mesh, 200-250 mesh, 250-300 mesh made by direct squeeze casting method, and plastic matrix of polypropylene was heated at a temperature of 170 C with the parameters of matrix and filler stirring at 30 rpm for 20 minutes and then poured into a mold at room temperature and then pressed with a pressure of 25 kgf/cm2 which was held for 5 minutes. The composites that have gone through the conditioning process are then cut into test specimens and subjected to mechanical testing of tensile-impact tests, chemical properties testing by FTIR, and physical properties testing by electron microscopy. From the test results, the mechanical properties obtained tensile strength between 14.464 to 19.557 MPa, with the highest tensile strength value at 7% loading variation and particle size 250-300 mesh while the lowest tensile strength at 13% loading variation and particle size 100-150 mesh. Impact testing obtained an impact value of 0.018 to 0.054 J/mm2. The impact value for loading variations is 13% and the particle size is 100-150 mesh, while the lowest impact value is obtained from specimens with a loading variation of 7% and a particle size of 250- 300 mesh. The results of the analysis of the mechanical properties of the tensile strength are influenced by the volume loading of the filler affects the tensile strength of the composite, this is because the loading of a low volume fraction can reduce the occurrence of voids so that the tensile strength increases. While the impact strenght is influenced by the size of the particle, the larger the particle size, the stronger the impact tends to be, this is because at a larger particle size the reinforcing particles are not easily deposited, thus increasing the impact strenght. Based on the results of the FTIR test, there is no chemical bond in the composite so the bond that occurs between the matrix and filler is only a mechanical bond. From the results of the electron microscope, the surface morphology of coconut shell powder has a rough surface so it provides good adhesive properties. The results of the analysis of physical properties, in all analyzed composite samples, have good particle distribution and physical bonding at the matrix-reinforcement interface.
