Abstract

The poem always has its uniqueness. This study focuses on the stylistic analysis of the poems “Conversations About Home (at the Deportation Center)” and “Backwards” by Warsan Shire. Stylistic analysis is used to determine the style and uniqueness of poetry. The stylistic level analysis of this study focuses on the phonological, grammatical, and lexical levels. These three levels are connected to analyze the meaning of the poem. This analysis uses a qualitative approach that describes all the data in this study. The results analysis show that there are language elements at the three stylistic levels contained in the poems “Conversation About Home (at the Deportation Center)” and “Backwards.” At the phonological level, there are rhyme, alliteration, assonance, and consonance. The researcher also found that consonance is the most frequently occurring element at the phonological level, followed by assonance and alliteration. Meanwhile, in terms of rhyme, Warsan Shire’s poems are identical to free-verse and tend to use free words rather than paying attention to the poem’s rhyme. The lexical level is divided into morphological analysis and syntactical analysis. The researcher found that the poem contains suffixes and prefixes at the morphological level. In the syntactical analysis, the researcher focuses on the word classes used by Warsan Shire. At the syntactical level, the researcher found that the poet uses a lot of “I” pronouns to create a poetic perspective and uses verbs and nouns that match the poem’s theme. At the morphological level, the suffix is the most dominant element of poetry compared to the prefix. Finally, at the lexical level, there are several figurative languages that Warsan shire uses to give hidden meanings and add dramatic elements to her poems.
