Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze personality development and the changing attitudes of one of the main characters, Demelza Poldark, in the story entitled Ross Poldark by Winston Graham. The writer formulates two problems for this study. The first formulated problem discusses the personality of Demelza. The second formulated the conflicts portrayed in the story and the third problem discusses how Demelza Poldark’s personality development. This thesis is used the qualitative method. The primary source is the novel by Ross Poldark by Winston Graham. To analyze the problems formulated above, the writer uses the theory of character from I.A. Schirova, the theory of conflict by Holman & Harmon, and the theory of personality development by Elizabeth Hurlock. The results of the study are; first, Demelza’s personality before her marriage traits are initially stubborn, impolite, and incapable of doing the household. Second, Demelza's personality after her marriage to Ross for the first time was a gentle one, polite one and capable of doing the household chores. She grows up in conflicts portrayed in the story between her father and her husband. Demelza’s conflict with her father starts when she makes a mistake with Ross. The second conflict is between Demelza and Ross. Struggling to overcome all the conflicts, Demelza’s personality changes. Demelza finally becomes a gentle, polite, and capable woman. It can be concluded that conflicts and challenges do not always necessarily exist to bring people down, instead conflicts and challenges can serve a higher purpose: to bring the best out of people.
