Abstract

The heat treatment process is the final stage of the manufacturing process before being used in accordance with its needs. The purpose of the heat treatment process is to improve the mechanical properties of a material. However, the frequent barriers to heat treatment include distortion, shape change and size (dimension). This is often the case after the quenching process, since the material experiences different cooling rates in different thickness sections. So as to cause tension at the surface. The purpose of this research is to know the influence of double quenching variation and cooling time at foundry Al 6061 to hardness and micro structure. The process of making the specimen is done by smelting Al 6061 at 700ºC temperature, then pour into metal mold. After the casting metal hardenes the metal mold and dips the casted material into a container in the cooling media contents and leave it for a few seconds then move to the next container that is already in the contents of different cooling media. And continued with the cutting process for specimen manufacture. Cooling medium used is Water cooling medium, Oil SAE40 and Solar with cooling time 5, 10, and 15 second. The test results indicate that the longer the quenching time the greater the number of grains and the smaller the average diameter of the grains, whereas the quenching time with a short time the number of grains is smaller but the average diameter of the grains increases. The lowest hardness value is on the media I Air 15 seconds → Oil SAE40 which is 45.7 HRB and the highest hardness is on the II Oil SAE40 media 10 seconds → Water of 49.4 HRB with the best cooling time is 10 seconds.
