Abstract

Apart from being an entertainment film, it is also a communication medium that can have an influence on the audience because in the film there are messages received by the audience, these messages are obtained through the signs and meanings contained in the film. The Southeast Asian horror film is no exception, which is known by the public as the scariest and sometimes sadistic horror film, the film is a Thai horror film entitled "The Medium". Best in 2021 in South Korea. This study aims to describe the stereotypes of Southeast Asian horror films depicted in the film “The Medium” using Roland Barthes semiotic analysis using qualitative methods with descriptive analysis. Where in this study, the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth will be sought which will result in an understanding of the stereotypes of Southeast Asian horror films. The results of this study indicate that a lot of myths that are believed by the community are shown in this film, namely that many Southeast Asian people believe in supernatural powers and supernatural things wrapped in local culture and customs with denotations of scenes that cannot be reasoned such as exorcising evil spirits and healed the sick without medicine but with spells and amulets.
