Abstract

The phenomenon of the Covid-19 virus, makes online media provide all the information needs for the public. However, the news about the Covid-19 virus caused readers to experience some changes in their mindset and behavior after reading information about the Covid-19 virus. The current study aims to identify the effects of the news of the Covid-19 virus on the online media Detik.com. This research uses Uses And Gratification Theory, with descriptive quantitative research methods. This study uses a sampling technique with Probability Sampling. After getting the data through a questionnaire instrument, the researcher tested it using SPSS. As a result, there is a significant influence from the news of the Covid-19 virus in the online media Detik.com on the mindset of 8th semester Fisip students of Untag Surabaya, but the strength is very low at 0.129 as seen in the determination analysis which is in the interval 0.00 – 0.199. Then, for the results of the hypothesis based on the t test, it shows that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted because the value is 4,016 > 1,984.
