Abstract

This thesis discusses about gender inequality in Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing. Gender inequality is an unfair treatment based on gender in terms of marriage, education, and others. Women are the one who most often suffer discrimination and violence due to gender inequality. This research will reveal a critical area using feminist literary criticism theory. The approach that is used in this study is feminist approach. This study uses a qualitative design by reading the novel Surfacing by Margaret Atwood which is used as data source. The result of the analysis and discussion of the novel is gender inequality is seen in the character Anna and the unnamed protagonist. This aspect can be seen from Anna's husband, David, who treats Anna very badly because he feels that he is superior, and the narrator shows that she has no identity because she doesn’t have name.
