Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in the level of surface roughness of the workpiece resulting from turning by varying the cutting speed of the lathe, and the feeding depth of the lathe using the HSS tool to the level of roughness of iron and aluminum. This research was carried out using an experimental method that involved several variables. These variables include the independent variable and the dependent variable. The independent variable is the variation of cutting speed and depth of feed, while the dependent variable is the surface roughness of iron and aluminum material. Based on the results of data analysis concluded: cutting speed affects the results of the quality of the workpiece surface. The higher the cutting speed used, the better the quality results. High cutting speed results in a decrease in cutting force and cross-sectional area of the shear plane, in the results of the depth of cut used there is a difference in the level of surface roughness of the workpiece. The greater the depth of cut used will cause the formation of tatal which will be connected or continuous and conversely the lower the depth of the cut, will result in intermittent tatal or separate, in the combination of cutting speed and depth of cut it is found that the results of roughness are the best (most smooth) at a cutting speed of 540 m / min and a ratio of 1.5mm with feeding depth of 0.112 mm. The higher, the cutting speed and the greater the depth of cut ratio, the lower the resulting roughness value (smooth).
