Abstract
The study analyzes "Defense Mechanism of Lilly in S.A Swann's Wolfbreed and Lucy in Lynn Okamoto's Elfen Lied”. This analysis is conducted to find out similarities and differences in defense mechanisms characters. This research is conducted because problems about violence and discrimination often occur in daily life and it can cause mental disorders in victims. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method to analyze defense mechanisms phenomena from two stories. This research uses comparative literature theory to compare two literary works from two different countries. Researcher uses psychoanalysis theory, defense mechanisms to analyze defense mechanism phenomena performed by two characters. The results of this study indicate that Lilly and Lucy perform several types of defense mechanisms, there are several similarities and differences between Lilly and Lucy's defense mechanisms. Similarities of defense mechanisms are repression and regression. Then, differences of defense mechanisms, Lilly performs sublimation, projection, introjection, and reaction formation. Meanwhile, Lucy performs displacement and fixation. Defense mechanism characters show that authors use this phenomenon to build a storyline and it reflects community culture in dealing with anxiety.
