Abstract

This research examines symbolic violence in Alex Urban’s The Kingfisher Secret novel. The writer examines appearance of symbolic violence and analysis Bourdieu’s capital and habitus in Alex Urban’s The Kingfisher Secret novel. This study uses the symbolic violence concept from Pierre Bourdieu and uses habitus, field and capital theory to support the analysis of symbolic violence. This research uses the extrinsic approach from Wellek and Warren, in which literary work is analyze through a sociological aspect. To find symbolic violence the writer uses a descriptive qualitative method. The result shows that symbolic violence appears in Alex Urban's The Kingfisher Secrets novel expressed with giving a gift (gift exchange), expressing affection, giving an order (indirect command), and refusing politely. The habitus is ruthlessly capitalistic, justifying all means and expectations to get a better life and condition. Symbolic violence is practiced by the agency to achieve its purpose and domination.
