Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the conversation analysis issues used by Barack Obama on National Public Radio’s (NPR) interview with Nina Totenberg. The topic is focused on turn-taking strategies used by Barack Obama during the interview. The problem statements discussed in this thesis are: (1) what types of turn-taking strategies are mostly used by Barack Obama, (2) how often turn-taking mechanisms are applied by Barack Obama in one utterance during the interview. This research applies a qualitative approach to analyze the data through the transcript of the dialogue between Barack Obama and Nina Totenberg. To analyze the data, this thesis also uses Stenstrom theory (1994) to identify and analyzes the characteristic of turn-taking and the mechanisms used by Barack Obama. From the analysis, the writer finds out that: (1) Obama uses three types of turn-taking strategies: taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn with the most turn-taking types he mostly used is holding the turn, (2) he often uses three mechanisms of silent pauses, filled pauses, and lexical repetition in one utterance. The analysis also shows that he repeats the same mechanisms of filled pauses mostly more than five to ten times, silent pauses more than three times, and lexical repetition more than twice in one utterance. After conducting this thesis, the writer finds that this study will make the readers know and understand the types of turn-taking strategies with the mechanisms and how to apply them.
