Abstract

This research examines the characteristics of magical realism in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Magical realism is a genre of literary work that represents magic based on traditional beliefs in the modern world. This novel contains Greek mythology about monsters, gods, and mythological creatures and has a tendency to be a literary work of magical realism. In this case, the magical realism theory proposed by Wendy B. Faris is used, which consists of the irreducible element, the phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realism, and disruption of time, space and identity. The purpose of this study is to describe the five characteristics of magical realism in the novel, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The approach used in this research is an extrinsic approach, and the data collection technique used in this research is the reading and writing technique, while the data analysis technique used is the analysis description technique, which is done by describing the facts which are then accompanied by data analysis. The results of the analysis of the characteristics of magical realism in each element indicate that this novel meets the criteria as a work of magical realism because the five characteristics can be found in the novel.
