Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing language features of men and women on Talk Show. It is chosen because the way how men and women convey their utterances showed their linguistic characteristic. Therefore, the aim of this research was to answer what types of men and women’s language features on Talk Show and the purpose of those features used by them. Besides, the research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed by identifying and classifying the six types of language features defined by Coates and ten types of language features by Lakoff. The findings showed that there were only five features that have classified as men and women’s language features used by both men and women on Talk Show. Those are Minimal Response, Compliments, Swearing and Taboo Language, Question and Hedges. In Men’s Talk Show, the total of language features that emerged is 25 times. Those are 6 of Minimal Response, 6 of Compliments, 1 of Swearing and Taboo Language, 1 of Question and 11 of Hedges. While in women's Talk Show, this research found there are 87 features used by women on Talk Show. The features are 40 of Lexical Hedges or Fillers, 2 of Empty Adjective, 1 of Hypercorrect Grammar, 1 of Superpolite Forms, 5 of Rising Intonation or Declaratives, 36 of Intensifiers and 10 of Minimal Response. But after the researcher did, Justin Bieber can also use the language features used by women, and Hillary Clinton can also use the language features used by men.
