Abstract

The study is about Catherine’s ambition in Jane Green’s Bookends. The objective of the study is to describe Catherine’s ambition and how she reaches her ambition. The writer uses qualitative research and applies intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach used in this study is character and since the study deals with ambition, the extrinsic approach applied is psychological approach. In this study, the data is word, phrases, or sentences for Jane Green’s Bookends. The writer collects the data which have relation with the topic and analyze them by using the research method. In this study, the writer finds that the main character, Catherine has ambition. Catherine’s ambition is to own a bookshop that also encompasses a café. In order to realize her ambition, Catherine decides to leave his job in advertising agent. To make her ambition come true, Catherine does everything and she never gives up, until she can realized her ambition. Thus, it can be further concluded that every hard working is never useless. This is reflected in Catherine’s experiences. She has ambition, she works very hard to reach them and is ready to face any risk that might occur. After analyzing the novel, the writer concludes that Catherine is a good ambition, because in reaching her ambition.
