Abstract

This thesis reports a study on directive speech used in dialogues of James Ene Henshaw’s Jewels of The Shrine. The study aims to find the types and forms of directives speech and the social factors of the choice of directive acts in this drama, based on Hymes’s theory of ethnography of speaking. This qualitative descriptive study intends to answer the questions on the types and forms of directives speech act that are used in communication among the characters and how Hymes’ social factors, abbreviated as S P E A K I N G, affect the choice of forms and types of directive acts. The study involves data taken from James Ene Henshaw’s Jewels of The Shrine. The study found twenty one (21) data of directive speech act in “Jewels of The Shrine”. The study found, first, there are three (3) types of directive acts: request consists of three (3) data, command consists of ten (10) data, suggestion consists of eight (8) data. Second, the study also found there are four (4) forms of sentences in directive acts: declarative consists of twelve (12) data, imperative consists of six (6) data, interrogative consists of two (2) data, and exclamative consist of one (1) data. Third, analysis of the social factors affecting the choice of forms and types of directive acts found there are five (5) different social factors affecting directive acts: Participant, Ends, Act sequence, Key,and Norm. Meanwhile, the other three social factors, namely Setting, Instrument, and Genre, did not seem to affect the choice of directive acts because they are the same in all types of directive acts used in the data. The study may provide more information on the types of directive speech act that are used in communication between both speaker and hearer especially in literary texts.
