Abstract

This thesis is about Santiago’s sanguine personality. Santiago is the main character of the novel, The Alchemist written by Paulo Celho. The objective of this study is to describe Santiago’s sanguine personality, the strength and weakness character. Santiago’s sanguine personality is expressed trough his behavior during his journey. In analysing the novel, qualitative method is used by making the descriptive analysis and explanation though the events and actions in the story The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Exstrinsive appoarch, in this case psychological appoarch is used to analyze the novel since sanguine personality is one of psychological problems. The result of the analysis shows that Santiago’s sanguine personality can be defined into the strong and weak characters. The strength of Santiago’s personality includes optimistic, adventurous, creative, friendly, and talkative. The weaknesses of Santiago’s personality includes restless, haphazard, and inconsistent. The influence of his strong character on his journey is that they support Santiago to continue his journey to gets the treasure. The influence of his weak character on his journey is that it can make Santiago learn to solve the problems with patience.
